Dear Commissioner Velasquez:

I am writing to respectfully ask for your support as well as that of your Department for our Community Watch Project. As you are aware, our community has suffered a series of hardships due to Hurricane Sandy. Our community understands the tremendous strain that the actual situation places on our men and women in uniform, and, in order to contribute to the well-being and safety of our community we would like to contribute by forming said Community Watch Project.

The purpose of this Community Watch is not to usurp the functions that rightly belong to our police department, but to serve as watch standers preventing criminal activity by ensuring that your department is timely informed of any suspicious activity in our Community. We intend to serve only as watch standers leaving the apprehension, when necessary, to the police. We will communicate with each other and with the police via social networking tools such as Facebook and twitter to ensure that there is a free flow of communication between your department and our community watch.

I think that this is an important step in the right direction. It will benefit the community at large by assisting in maintaining our community safe from criminal activity.
